Is Lasik for me?

People with up to -14 diopters for nearsighted, up to +6 for farsighted and people with astigmastism that have between -6 and +6 diopters can be treated with lasik or lasek.

Furthermore, to be a candidate for lasik eye surgery, you ...

Different kinds of vision disorders.

Vision disorders can be divided into three main groups: In a nearsighted eye the length of the eyeball is too long which means that the focal point is in front of the retina. In a farsighted eye the length of the eyeball is too short which means that the focal point is behind the retina. In an astigmatic eye, irregularities in the shape of the cornea cause distortion and blurring of the visual image.

We all have some degree of visual defect, but we dont all need glasses. Of the eyes total refraction capacity (60 diopters), the cornea stands for about 2/3 and the eyes lens about 1/3. A young person though, can increase the refraction capacity in his lens. To get a sharp image of a subject that is close to you, the eyes refraction increases for a normal seeing eye. This is called Accommodation. A farsighted person can correct his refraction the same way when he looks from a distance and therefore doesnt need optical corrections as young. Nearsighted people dont have that kind of correction possibilities. This is why most of the bearers of glasses and contact lenses are nearsighted.

The eyes refraction capability changes when the individual is growing. Most newborns are farsighted. When they grow, their eyes grow longer and thats why the farsightedness in small children are more uncommon compared to newborns. When the eyes growth in length is too big in relation to the eyes refraction capability, the focal point is moved forward and thats when farsightedness becomes nearsightedness. This development is regulated by a persons genes just a regular growth is. The eyes growth in length continues until the person is about 25 years old and is the fastest when the body is growing the fastest.
