IntacsIntacs are for those who have keratoconus and want to do something about it. Intacs are two small transparent thin "half rings" and are made of the same material as contact lenses. They flatten the cornea so the cornea gets a rounder shape instead of a pointy shape. Intacs stops future changes in the cornea and in this way stops the further development of the disease. They are placed permanently in the cornea, but can be removed or replaced if the eyesight changes. These "half rings" come in different sizes depending on how big the vision disorder is. The treament takes around 15 minutes. The patients get local anastesia by the use of eye drops. A small opening at the side of the cornea is made and then the tunnels are created in which the "half rings" are placed. Patients with keratoconus dont need specially made glasses after the treatment. Keratoconus is an eye disease which makes the cornea pointy, irregular and even thinner. In time the disease can lead to great distorsions in the vision and even blindness. With the use of intacs the progress of the disease can be stopped and at the same time release the patient from the use of glasses. |
